🚀 AI Traffic Report — June 9th, 2025

• Perplexity AI’s search engine just hit 780 million queries in May, with over 20% month-over-month growth. Their CEO predicts a billion queries a week within a year at this rate.

• Over one-third of all internet traffic is now automated bots. While some bots are good, like search engine crawlers, the sheer volume of harmful automation is a massive problem for online security and privacy.

• Reddit is suing Anthropic for scraping their data to build Claude. This follows X's move to block AI training on its content. If more platforms follow suit, how will future AI models be trained?

• Creators on social media are pretending to be AI-generated and “doing it for the prompt”. Some users can’t distinguish human-made videos from Veo 3 generated content. Have we crossed the generative AI rubicon?

An artificial web

AI content is now so indistinguishable from real content that people are pretending to be AI-generated. All over social media this week, creators were “doing it for the prompt”. Usually this meant taking shots of whisky or doing something reckless “because the prompt told them to”. In the comments, some people questioned if the content was AI-generated.

We have reached a critical inflection point and now the future of the internet seems uncertain. And content generation isn’t the only change AI is bringing to the web. Up to one third of internet traffic is now bots. Meanwhile, future iterations of LLMs still need content to train on. Can future LLMs even be trained on an internet filled with “AI Slop”?

Many fear that the internet will turn into a wasteland of bots sharing AI-generated content and mimicking the conversations us humans used to have on the web. As someone who grew up on Tumblr, a platform with a strong community and unique culture, the “flattening” of the internet scares me. But what does the future of the internet really look like? And what can we do to prepare?

The web after AI — three visions

Over the next few years, AI content, tools and algorithms will saturate every corner of the web. Let’s make a few predictions to understand what the online world might look like 5 years down the line. We’ll also look at how people might respond to each possible future, and how businesses will adapt to stay ahead. As you move through each possibility, think about your own corner of the internet. You might notice these changes aren’t just theoretical. The seeds of these digital futures are already visible in our current online experiences.

The hyper-personalized filter bubble

Imagine this: You open Tiktok and an AI-generated local news reporter is covering a new gluten-free cafe that’s opening two blocks from your apartment. The reporter suspiciously resembles your most-watched Youtuber, and even offers you a free blueberry scone (your favorite pastry).

If this happened today, you might feel unsettled. But 5 years from now? This flavor of hyper-personalized content might be the new norm. In the filter bubble, we are served content that meticulously reflects every facet of our personality. News feeds, entertainment, advertisements, and even social interactions will be highly curated. Much of the content we encounter will be AI-generated and designed to perfectly align with our tastes and beliefs.

But the AI impact won’t end with social media algorithms. AI agents, or digital assistants, will handle many routine online tasks, from shopping to managing communications. This will further shield us from the unfiltered web. Exposure to the vast depths of the internet will be next to impossible. Discovering things outside of our algorithmic focus will take a concerted effort.

How will users react?

In the filter bubble, users will appreciate the convenience that AI provides, but feel an underlying anxiety. The internet will seem less "real" and more manipulative. The classic browser named “Internet explorer” won’t make sense anymore because the internet is now about “serving” rather than exploring. Nostalgia for the internet’s simpler beginnings will inspire the growth of tight-knit, human-focused online corners.

How will businesses adapt?

• Nostalgia focus: Tools will be developed to capture nostalgia for the “old” internet. We may see platforms reintroduce forum-style interfaces, with AI simulating nostalgic internet experiences that resonate with users.

• Algorithm opt-out: Social media platforms will implement controls that allow users temporarily escape their filter bubble. Businesses will need to be transparent about how their AI algorithms curate content. Platforms may provide visibility into personalization data and enable users to modify algorithmic inputs directly.

• Focus on human-to-human interaction: Platforms will build features that support genuine human connection. We can expect to see verified human profiles and community-focused digital spaces.

The authenticity premium digital economy

You open Instagram and start scrolling. A reel catches your eye. It’s the computer engineer you first came across during his layoff, talking openly about purpose, uncertainty, and starting over. You didn’t stick around for the tech content. You stayed because his story drew you in. Like many of the creators in your feed, he shares with honesty, and you appreciate the way he turns personal moments into something meaningful. Like most of the accounts you follow, you appreciate his focus on storytelling and his vulnerability in front of the camera.

In the Authenticity Premium web, real human connection is elevated as the most valuable commodity on the internet. As AI content saturates the mainstream, a strong counter-movement gains momentum. Genuine human creativity and interaction are elevated as "human-made" becomes a brand in itself. Platforms and creators proudly display the human origin of their work with verification badges.

How will users react?

In an authenticity premium web, people will seek out and pay more for human-made content. This content will be viewed as more trustworthy, artistic, and relatable. Users will prioritize experiences that feel authentic and connect them. Unlabeled AI content, especially in areas like news and personal advice, will be viewed with mistrust and skepticism.

The internet will become a duality: a bot-filled swamp of AI-generated content, but also a place to form and preserve human to human connection. There will be a conscious effort to navigate and discern the two webs.

How will businesses adapt?

• Human verification: Platforms will implement systems to verify human creators and the origin of content.

• Niche communities: Platforms will support niche communities centered around specific human creators and authentic themes.

• Content creator empowerment: Platforms will offer tools and monetization models that specifically empower and protect human artists, journalists, and content creators.

• Slow content: We will see a move away from hyper-optimized, algorithm-driven viral content towards more thoughtful human storytelling.

• User-generated (UGC) content: Businesses will increase budgets for user-generated content from authentic and verified creators.

The AI-collaborative internet

Your favorite independent filmmaker just released a new 7-part film on TikTok. Real actors appear against AI-generated landscapes. The “real” and the “artificial” are seamlessly blended to create something both fantastical and deeply human.

In this scenario, AI is expanding the creative canvas. Digital creators will use AI tools to unlock new forms of expression, merging handcrafted performance with machine-generated worlds. As storytelling becomes more collaborative between human and machine, the line between creator and engine, starts to blur.

The most successful creators will be the ones wielding it with intention. They’ll use it to move faster, imagine bigger, and bring personal stories to life.

How will users react?

People will appreciate the increased quantity and quality of content, even if they know AI played a role. The focus shifts from "is it human or AI?" to "is it good and engaging?" There will be a higher expectation for polished, professional-looking content across all platforms.

How will businesses adapt?

• AI tools for creators: Social media platforms will integrate advanced AI tools directly into their creation suites. Users will have easy access to AI tools for content generation, editing, and optimization.

• Showcasing creative process: Features that allow creators to reveal their AI-assisted workflows, fostering transparency and educating audiences.

• New forms of collaborative content: Platforms will explore features that enable users to collaborate on content creation using AI tools, combining individual creativity with collective intelligence.

• Focus on niche and hyper-specific content: AI's ability to generate content on demand will lead to an explosion of hyper-niche content catering to extremely specific interests.

How can we plan for the future of the web?

Looking ahead to 2030, I see the web shaped by a blend of these three futures.

I imagine hyper-personalized feeds that know us better than we know ourselves. The platforms we use will offer the ultimate convenience, but also risk narrowing our worldview. I see a rise in “human-made” content in response to AI saturation, with authenticity as a core value-driver. I also imagine creators collaborating with AI to produce work that’s faster, richer, and more immersive than ever before.

The web won’t collapse into one future. It will split, recombine, and evolve. Some spaces will feel soulless, stuffed with slop. Others will morph into a brand-new communities where machine-assisted creativity is used to deepen human connection.

So how do we build for this messy, multifaceted future?

We start with a new set of principles grounded in flexibility, authenticity, and intentional use of AI.

Principles for creating in a fragmented internet:

🧩 Build for fragmentation. The “mass internet” is disappearing. Start thinking in micro-communities, not broad demographics. Build experiences that speak directly to niche cultures, subgroups, and identity pockets.

🪞Design with transparency. As AI-generated content floods the web, it it will be up to brands to help users feel grounded. Whether you’re using AI or not, make your process visible. Lean on human verification and behind-the-scenes glimpses to build trust.

🎭 Elevate the human edge. In an authenticity economy, human perspective becomes the gold standard. Put faces to brands and focus on voice, vulnerability, and storytelling. The content that feel most human will stand out against a feed saturated with AI slop.

🤝 Treat AI as a creative partner. Use AI to build faster and experiment more, but keep a human creativity at the center of your strategy. The sweet spot is where human taste meets machine capability.

➰ Stay flexible. The AI-driven web is changing every day. The tools will keep evolving and so will the norms. Watch how users respond and be ready to pivot in response to changing attitudes.

The Browser Reimagined

This week, I almost threw my laptop out the window while trying to book a last minute trip to New York. Like many Fridays that came before, I found myself wading through 30+ browser tabs before 10am. There I sat, coffee in hand, frantically switching between flights, hotels, and rental car websites. In the age of AI, why is booking travel still such a hassle?

Luckily, frantic multi-step booking may soon be a thing of the past. That’s because companies like Opera Neon are developing agentic browsers, or browsers that use AI agents to autonomously perform tasks and interact with web content. Booking travel is just one task that will likely be transformed by this technology. According to pioneers in the space, this new generation of browsers will anticipate user needs, understand intent, and take action.

Agentic browsers are positioned to transform how users interact with the web. If you think Google AI overview is a web disrupter, just wait until you hear what browser agents will be capable of!

Let’s break down what this means for the web, and what marketers and builders need to know.

What is an Agentic browser?

Think of an agentic browser as your second set of hands for the web. Unlike traditional browsers, which are only capable of displaying simple web pages, agentic browsers will be capable of acting and executing. An agentic browser uses AI to understand your goals and carry out multi-step tasks across different websites.

This new generation of browsers changes the function of a browser from searching to doing. They will use AI models to interpret your requests, navigate websites, fill out forms, compare information, and even make decisions on your behalf. For example, instead of chaotically opening a million tabs to book flights, hotels, and rental cars, an agentic browser could, in theory, handle the entire travel booking process. All it would take is a single prompt like, "Book me a trip to New York next month for a long weekend." I’m not sure who’s more excited for this– me, or my browser tabs finally catching a break!

Agentic browsers take simple automation one step further. They are designed to exhibit agency. This means they can perceive their environment (the web), reason about their goals, plan and execute actions, and adjust in real-time.

How Will Agentic Browsers Change the web?

Streamlined user experience

First, user experience will be simplified. If agentic browsers are truly capable of acting independently, there will be less need to navigate multiple sites. Instead, crawling the web will be left to the bots. With this shift, there will be less of a need to remember login details and manually compare data. Users will interact with the web in an abstract manner, focusing on outcomes instead of clicks.

Evolving web traffic dynamics

Second, if agentic browsers are highly adopted, website traffic patterns will shift. Similar to the Google overview effect, users will have less of a need to directly visit independent websites. Page views and traditional navigation metrics may decline for some sites, and the value will move from being found to being actionable by an agent.

SEO reimagined

Third, SEO will transform in a major way. Current SEO heavily relies on keywords, backlinks, and content designed for human consumption. In an agent-driven web, optimizing for agents that understand intent and execute tasks will be the name of the game. This could mean optimizing for structured data, clear calls to action, and integration with agentic browser capabilities. Your website will need to be legible and actionable for an AI agent, not just a human.

New business opportunities

Finally, new business models and opportunities will emerge. Companies that facilitate agent-to-website interaction, provide agent-friendly APIs, or specialize in optimizing web presence for agents could see significant growth.

How can builders and marketers adapt to an agent-driven web?

Like it or not, an agent-driven web is a rapidly approaching reality. Luckily, there are a few ways that builders and marketers can prepare.

For Builders

Mass-adoption of agentic browsers will elevate the importance of backend structure. Builders will need to balance agent-legibility with human-centered design. Here’s what builders can do to succeed:

1. Prioritize structured data and APIs: Make your website's data and functionalities easily consumable by AI agents. Focus on schema markup, expose APIs, and make sure your site's logic is clear and predictable. Agents thrive on well-organized, machine-readable information.

2. Focus on functionality over pure aesthetics: While design remains important for human users, an agent values a clean, logical flow. Balance human-centered and agent-driven design by simplifying user journeys. Be sure to remove friction points that might confuse an agent.

3. Consider agent legibility: Consider how an AI agent would interact with your site. Can it easily identify products, add items to a cart, or fill out a form? You may need to rethink traditional UI/UX patterns.

4. Invest in agent testing: Just as you test for human usability and SEO, you'll need to test how well AI agents can navigate and perform tasks on your site.

For Marketers

Agentic browsers will change the game when it comes to SEO. Marketers will need to ensure that pages are easily understood by agents. Content will need to convey a deep understanding of what users are trying to accomplish. Here’s how marketers can get ahead of the disruption:

1. Shift from "clicks" to "actions": With an agent-dominant web, your goal will be less about driving traffic to a specific page. Instead, you will be focused on enabling agents to complete actions on your behalf or for your users. Focus on optimizing conversions at an agentic level.

3. Explore new attribution models: Traditional last-click attribution might become obsolete. You'll need to understand how agentic interactions contribute to conversions and adapt your measurement strategies.

4. Prepare for "agent SEO": Your products will need to be easily discoverable and actionable by agentic browsers. This might involve new forms of structured data optimization, clear pricing, and straightforward terms. Your value proposition needs to be clear and concise for an AI to present to a user.

5. Embrace transparency and trust: If agents are acting on a user's behalf, trust will be paramount. Clearly communicate what an agent can do on your site and ensure a secure and transparent process.

The Agentic Crossroads

Agentic browsers promise to revolutionize the way we interact with the web. When I think about the possibilities of an agentic web, I imagine every frustrating experience I’ve had navigating a difficult user interface, now mediated by a friendly agent who lives in my screen. I also wonder about the risks of using a browser agent. How could I be sure my privacy was protected? What if an agent makes the wrong purchase on my behalf? I’m sure others hold these same concerns, and I wonder how widespread wariness could impact acceptance of this tech.

Mass adoption or not, agentic browsers will be shaking things up very soon. Builders and marketers will navigate a new landscape of agent-legible web design, altered web traffic, and an inevitable overhaul of SEO. The critical takeaway: prepare for a web where AI agents are active participants, not just passive tools. Understanding their capabilities, limitations, and how users will interact with them is no longer optional. Adapt your strategies, optimize for machine readability, and consider how this shift will impact your brand and your audience.

Now, Google I/O has delivered an even more profound shift: "AI Mode." This isn't just an extra blurb; it's a complete replacement for conventional search available to all users. Your Website's Traffic is Under Attack.

You've heard the whispers, seen the reports. Early data from across the industry is screaming it: organic click-through rates are plummeting. For many, we're talking about a 20-40% lower click-through rate (CTR), as Google's AI simply delivers the answer without ever sending users to your site.

This isn't theory. This is the new, brutal reality of "zero-click searches" and "AI-first search experiences." Google wants to keep users on its platform, and AI Overviews and AI Mode are the ultimate tools to do it.

From Links as Destinations to Links as Footnotes.

AI Overviews literally demote links, pushing your content down the page and summarizing it for digestion without a click. But AI Mode takes it a step further: it all but buries links. This "mechanization of work" removes the step where users leave Google's platform, reducing the time and effort needed to navigate elsewhere. This is "summarization rather than retrieval, regeneration rather than fact-finding, and vibe-y reconstruction over deterministic reproduction”.

So, what now? Watch your traffic vanish?

Beyond the headline, it doubles as a blueprint for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

Here’s what stood out:

1. Every fact must be sentence-level.

A line in the leaked Claude prompt states that “EVERY specific claim… should be wrapped in <antml:cite> tags”. Because each tag’s index points to one sentence (e.g., 0-4), the model can only cite text that exists as a clean, self-contained sentence. If your page buries facts inside run-on prose, Claude has nothing precise to tag and the claim is omitted.

Rule: Claude cites exact sentences only.

Optimization Tips:

• Write key claims as short, declarative sentences.

• Avoid burying important facts in paragraphs or compound sentences.

• Use FAQ sections or callouts to isolate statements like: “X tool integrates with over 50 platforms.”

Example:

“Uncitable” Copy: “Unlike some tools, we kind of personalize learning at scale, usually when integrations are set up right.”

GEO Optimized Copy: “LearnLoop personalizes lessons for every student by analyzing real-time quiz results.”

2. Less is more

Claude is told to minimize citations. Your content needs to be precise, scannable, and quote-worthy in isolation.

Rule: Claude minimizes citation span.

Optimization Tips:

• Be concise: 1–2 sentence answers are ideal.

• Remove fluff and hedging language ("probably," "in many cases").

• Use formatting (headlines, bold, bullet points) to make it easy for models to extract high-signal content.

3. Metadata doesn’t count.

Sidebars, tooltips, and meta tags are ignored. Only the visible body text gets cited.

Rule: Claude only cites visible body text.

Optimization Tips:

• Move essential facts and claims into the main content.

• Don't rely on alt text, tooltips, footers, or schema markup alone.

• Embed key messages in the visible content of landing pages, blog posts, product pages, and documentation.

4. No source = no answer.

The Claude prompt instructs: “If the search results do not contain any information relevant to the query, then politely inform the user that the answer cannot be found…” That policy forbids unsupported speculation. When no eligible sentence exists, Claude must decline the request. Your brand must supply quotable answers up-front.

Rule: Claude won’t answer if no valid sentence is found.

Optimization Tips:

• Proactively answer user questions in your content, even basic ones.

• Use natural language phrasing:

  • “What is X?” → “X is a…”

  • “How does Y work?” → “Y works by…”

• Write content that anticipates how people might prompt AI.

5. Consensus matters.

Claude can cite multiple sources for a single fact. This shows the model values corroboration. If you're not echoing or being echoed, you're less likely to surface. Publish clear, verifiable facts and reference trusted material so generative models have matching lines to cite.

Rule: Claude can cite multiple docs for one claim.

Optimization Tips:

• Publish the same core fact on several owned assets.

• Publish or guest post across multiple domains to reinforce credibility.

• Reference and echo trusted third-party research or data to be part of the “citation mesh.”

GEO Takeaway

Generative engines don’t surf, they extract. While traditional SEO helps you climb a list of links, GEO helps you land inside the answer itself. Follow Claude’s rules: isolate facts, trim filler, and place them where the model can see them. Audit one page today and turn each key claim into a single, clean sentence.
